MODulator - DEModulator

A device that converts the signal from a computer into a series of tones for transmission over the telephone lines.  The process is reversed at the other end.

 

For the most part this technology is no longer used. VAN previously using modem technology have replaced this communication protocol with FTP scripts, a much more reliable and faster connection.
