Communications - AKA Data Transport

Transmission of EDI documents is done by use of an Internet connection (i.e. FTP, TCP\IP, AS2, HTTPS, etc.) or perhaps a modem (to change the data into a telecommunications-compatible signal) connection, and possibly, depending on the communications method, facilitated through a communications software (to initiate, manage and terminate the flow of data) package.

VANS

Communication or Data transport through an EDI MAILBOX from a Value Added Network (VAN ) by an internet connection (or still in some cases dial-up).  This service functions like the postal service but is electronic.  Users rent a mailbox (Electronic Storage Device) through which they send and receive EDI documents.  This service simplifies communications because each user only needs the ability to call his mailbox no matter how many trading partners there are.  The VAN sorts and delivers EDI documents to the mailbox of each recipient. VANs of course charge for this service assigning monitory amounts to the number of Kilo Characters KC transmitted, any conversion of data and mailbox rental.

AS2 EDI INT

The benefit of EDI INT or "EDI over the internet" is that AS2 allows for faster data  transport and no VAN charges. Companies have the responsibility to open a port and maintain a constant connection (always listening). There is typically an annual charge for the AS2 software, this however can be considerably more cost effective than a VAN

FTP - SFTP

"(Secure) File Transfer Protocol" is a direct connection with your trading partner. This is preferable option by most companies as Qualedi Software allows a number of tools to monitor successful data transmissions. Resending data, Audit, View Print received documents, email alerts for failed transmissions are all part of built in tools in Qualedi Software.  As there are no additional charges for VAN Mailboxes or AS2 Software this is a cost effective and reliable solution.
